I hate it when businesses start to promote Christmas in July.

So I decided to wait until August.

Seriously though, for those existing clients (or potentially new clients) who are pondering giving Bugs and Butterflies Photography portraits this holiday season, now is a good time to book your appointment if you’d like to select from premium dates and times.

In order to provide the very best customer experience, I limit the amount of sessions I take per month. The past three years in a row, I have had to turn away several families wanting sessions in October, November & December because they contacted me too late in the season and I was booked through the rest of the year.

If you’re planning on giving Bugs and Butterflies Photography portraits as holiday gifts, it is recommended you complete your session by the end of October.

September is a beautiful month for outdoor family sessions at a park or on the beach. But I always have great ideas for families who would prefer to come into the studio for their session.

I’m looking forward to seeing you soon!

(Yes, this is the same baby from the former post, but this is how he reacted when I told him I might be booked if he calls me for a session too late).

Max’s Day

When we picked little Max up from preschool yesterday, there was a sheet of paper that was titled “Max’s Day” in his backpack.  Max’s teachers decided to write a detailed summary of his day.  This isn’t something that happens regularly, but I decided that this written gem is a keeper.  It just describes….his life as a boy at 4.  Here it is:

8:30-10:00 a.m:  Excellent, very attentive, played well with friends.

10:00 a.m: Kicked student walking to sign language class.

10:20-10:45 a.m: Played well in floor activity by himself; worked well on witch project

10:45 a.m: Pulled student’s hair

11:45 a.m. Poked student in eyes while lining up after recess

12:30-2:30 Did good during nap time.  He fell asleep for a little bit.

3-4:45: For the most part he played very well with other children.  He had one incident (throwing sand in a student’s eyes in the sand box).

This is Max.

sweet baby curls

i certainly enjoyed photographing this little cutie! she has beautiful, expressive eyes and big full cheeks and bouncy little curls.   You know, the sweet hair that never looks quite the same after the first haircut.  And a couple times during the session she was just a touch on the wild side….

P.S. Hold on for a random thought.  I am *STILL* digging the Ben and Jerry’s Creme Brulee icecream and apparently the secret is out as to how good this stuff really is.  Half the time when Kent comes home from the grocery store (yes, my sweet hubby does almost all our grocery shopping), he comes home empty handed.  SOMEONE ELSE is buying the stuff up like crazy!!! OH NO.  I really have had too many containers this past several months.  Especially after a really long day at work and play–say…..12:30 a.m.  That’s right, I digest the stuff when it’s guaranteed to go straight to my thighs.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day! My family and I are planning on spending part of the day at Gilroy Gardens (or Bonfante Gardens as I still like to call it), then after the sun wears us all out, I will come home and take a nap with my little Max (4).  Little Max moved from a crib to a queen sized bed several months ago and I have to tell you….I adore weekend naps with him.  I stay up late most nights during the week, so this weekend sleep catch up is a necessity.  Max is not much of a snuggler, but I love watching him drift off to sleep.

My gift for Mother’s Day is a complete detail of my car by all three boys.  Kent has been intermittently working on this project all day long and with the boys helping, they used way more water than necessary as they enjoy the spraying/rinsing part of the wash.   My car was washed, then waxed and I can hear the vacuum going now.  He will use that oily stuff on the inside that I love the smell of….forgetting the name now, but it gives it that ‘new car smell.’  This is what I consider the BEST present because it is thoughtful and kind and they all participated.  I bet I also get breakfast in bed–that’s become a tradition for my birthday and Mother’s Day.  Eggs benedict with extra hollandaise and perhaps an extra egg.  (Sometimes I can eat 3!!)

Lastly, I’m waiting for a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  That I ordered for myself.  Yep, you read that right! I didn’t intend on this happening, but I was online ordering flowers for my mom and saw this really great arrangement.  (The same flowers you see above in this post–aren’t they great?) That arrangement was not available in Ohio, and I really, really liked them, so I decided I could enjoy some flowers of my own.

Tanner came up with another humdinger of a question in the car on the way to hockey practice yesterday.  (He and I riding alone).  The question was….”Where do babies come from?” I have now determined, based on how I responded to that question and the “Is Santa real?” question last month, that I pretty much stink at answering these very important questions.  I know for the babies question, I went into way too much detail.  After I finished bumbling it, I asked him to explain what I just explained and he didn’t want to, said he was a bit embarassed.   Hmm.

Anyhow…that’s it for now.  Thanks for reading and have an incredible day with your loved ones tomorrow!!!!!

Don’t try this at home….

So, for those who don’t already know, I have two awesome boys.  Tanner is 8 and Max is 3.   Today, Tanner and I decided to try making our own bubblegum.  Before I launch into this afternoon’s saga, I need to tell you that I have already attempted (well, fumbled) this in the past.  I actually TAUGHT a segment on bubble gum making one day at Tanner’s school.  (It was a volunteer thing and the teacher they had planned to teach it had canceled at the last minute).  What the heck! Sure, I can’t bake a cake, or bake anything but brownies, but I’m sure I can make bubblegum if you give me written directions.  Of course, I’ll wing it in front of the 2nd and third graders.  Anyway, I had 1 teacher helper and 3 other parents who were supposed to be in assist mode, which turned into  “Michelle’s never done this before so let’s form a team” approach, and I’d say about 10% of our effort was successful.  Only one group of 4 students actually ended up with gum they could chew without making a terrible face upon impact to the tongue.  Even though each batch tasted really, really bad, they all wanted their plastic little baggies of gum to take home.  Maybe they took it home and used it as a sort of gorilla glue for various home projects….This reminds me of a story for another day.  My experience as a field trip driver when Tanner was a kindergartner.  He still talks about it to this day…..

Oops, back to the topic at hand.  So, I had LOTS of the ingredients left over from last year, and we decided we should give it a go again.  How hard could it be? The answer is….harder than last time because now I was doing it without any other adult supervision.  So my first mistake was overheating the glue (I mean gum base) in the microwave.  I was remembering the first batch we made at school –I did not microwave it long enough and the gum base stuck to all the utensils we were using and became so sticky so fast it was basically rendered unusable.  So much so, a crowbar would not remove it from the mixing bowl I’d brought and the one male volunteer parent on my team permanently scratched my corningware trying to scrape it out and clean it for the next batch of kids coming in to try the recipe.  So, today’s batch was way too hot as it came out of the microwave and we couldn’t kneed it and it got really, really sticky as it cooled off.  Then, after 15 minutes of kneading, Tanner and I had a taste.  YUCK! NO FLAVOR! So we added some watermelon flavoring to the bubble gum flavor we had already added.  I told Tanner to add 5 more drops, so he poured half the mini flavoring bottle into the ball of dough.  It became a really bright pink color, which leeched onto our fingers and hands as we continued to knead the dough.  After all, the more you knead it, the better the gum is supposed to be.  So we took a taste again.  YUCK! Some horrible bitter taste (too much flavoring!) had taken over the gum–I had to quickly find a trash can for mine and Tanner was close behind.  This is when we noticed our hands and fingers were now completely stained bright pink with the flavoring.  It took three types of hand soaps to find one that would take some of the stuff off, and Tanner went to bed with pink hands.   Anyway, I am going to take the extra ingredients back to the school for the next sap who wants to try their hand at teaching bubble gum making in the spring.   There are some things that are easier to buy rather than make on your own and I guess gum is one of them.  But our experiment was more about spending time together doing something fun rather than actual gum quality, and Tanner was prompt in telling his father all about the flavorless gum we made when he got home from work.

Now what does all this have to do with great photography? NOTHING.  Absolutely nothing, but I thought sharing some random thoughts might be fun.  Enjoy tomorrow!

Lush landscape

I couldn’t resist posting another image of our trip.    I’m calling this one “Nameless Beach”, because I can’t remember what island, let alone what beach this is.   Shame on me.  That’s what I get for waiting five months to develop my vacation pictures.   Sound familiar?

Wish I were there…

Haleakala sunset

Welcome to my first blog post.   I will be utilizing the new blog for all sorts of things! Deep thoughts, shallow thoughts, recent work, recent play……

The image above was taken back in February of this past year.   Kent and I took a trip to Hawaii all by ourselves.   That’s right, just the two of us.  The trip was a gift to each other for our 10th anniversary, even though we celebrated 12 years of being married this past June.   When you have two full time jobs, two young children, and lots of things going on all the time, it’s really, really hard to plan a get a way like this, but we finally did it.  We had a WONDERFUL time, and I will be sprinking the blog with vacation images from time to time to remind me of our wonderful trip to paradise.  Did i mention it was my very first trip to Hawaii? I’d love to bring the kids back next time we go.   We did take advantage of being kid-less such as spending two hours eating every meal, sleeping in until 10 a.m. several times and sampling as many Mai Tais as we could.   By the way, the image is of Haleakala at sunset.
